Greetings all, Somewhat new to the industry, just an introduction I am currently overseas working for a Caterpillar Dealership, I am a class A journeyman technician turned instructor, turned technical communicator, I have been over here for 2 years and have 18 months left on my contract. I am looking at a career change when i return to the US, During my duration as a Tech i have bought and built a 79 Extended Hood W900A 60" Flat Top sitting on a 93 Pete frame, Pete Air Leaf, DS402 3:55 eatons, 3406BATAAC (525 to the ground) Fuller 9 speed with a 1241D Spicer 4, Tri colored 280" wheelbase and she is absolutely gorgeous. I grew up log trucking and lumber trucking for our family owned sawmill, A ranch that we logged required us to maintain their cows and yearly transport to different pastures and to the packing house. I do have a lot of trucking experience and some cattle experience although limited to local ranches, no feed lots, slaughterhouses etc. My experience is also limited in the Authority, IFTA, and insurance game, As owner operators hauling our own product and usually less than 250 miles from home we were exempt from most everything except USDOT, Fuel and WD (Weigh Distance) NM plates. I have done some research and seen some places that help organize IFTA Authority and other things together is this something that is recommended? DOT requires monthly and annual truck inspections that I am familiar with but what about the trailer? Cost of authority, IFTA, Specialty Insurance? I also see companies like Beef Corp that lease a trailer for 18% of revenue and maintain the trailer, tires, brakes, 50% washout costs, or would it be better to buy a trailer myself and deal with a broker? And finally what costs for startup am i looking at, Authority, Registration, IFTA, Insurance etc. Responses are greatly appreciated, Josh |

Anyone? 1. IFTA / Authority organized packages for newbies? 2. Insurance Cost? Good place to go (Young Driver 25 clean MVR) 3. USDOT Requirements, Trailer Inspections? 4. Leasing a trailer 18% of total revenue for maintenance etc and loads is it worth it? 5. Purchase a trailer? 6. Broker? or Find my own loads like the load board on here? 7. Field requirements? I.E. Minimum 48' Trailer and 2005 or newer truck? 8. Fuel Card? (IFTA Paperwork, Monthly? Quarterly)? 9. Taxes? Monthly? Quarterly? Apologies if some of these are dumb questions but i have been out of the "for hire" game for awhile our family business turned back all our Class A CDLs for Class "E" licenses (26001 or more) Non commercial. And I havent ever been a part of the paperwork side for myself before, any answers are helpful thanks; Josh |
