Russell - I hear and feel your compassion! I also appreciate it! i too have been doing this for a very long time. When I'm not farming/ ranching, I'm trucking. I get to see the best of both worlds by my father being an owner of two diffrent Livestock sale barns. I'll be up front with you here, I will not leave his sale barns for less than $3.42 a mile. Comparing yours to mine is an .08 cent difference, and that's a choice for the shipper or as they like to put it "best availible rate!" I also use the $3.20 a mile rule if I get out somewhere and don't already have another load waiting on me. I don't look at it as a backhaul rate, it's a rate i will allow the shipper to negoitate to. If he/she finds a cheaper carrier/transporter then more power to him! I like you know what it cost me to run my business and what it take to make it effecient, which in turn makes it more profitable. Im not going to sit around truck stop or motels letting daily expenses eat up my profits. People in our business should do everything thay can to stream line their bottom lines. You are absolutley correct about the wear and tear on our equipment. I can remeber when 10k in an escrow account would allow you to do an out of frame engine replacement, now it will not even get an inframe motor job done. I hate to admit it, but you are right about fellow Livestock Haulers or owners cutting rates! If the Shipper had to sit on the livestock because he couldn't find a carrier or transporter that would haul for the cheaper rates, how long do you think they would stay in business? Not Long! If a shipper is known for cheaper rates, don't you think he also knows who will haul for the cheapest rate! Absolutely they do! What really bothers me in this industry are those that don't own any of the equipment they are driving nor know the actual cost involved in owning it, but yet will under the table will book a load and pocket the the money! That's not saying everyone thats not an owner is a bad person, because your not, i'm only saying that there are those out here that are doing it and that effects all of us!

I agree with you both. ALSO, to me there is no such thing as a back haul. I travel to the place, I pay for fuel to get there, I back up open the doors, load the cattle and drive to the destination. Right now, we have certain truckers hauling feeders from my state for less than 2.00. I can't get loads now. The run in this state goes for about two and half months in the fall and has provided a nice living. Now, its dog eat dog. I would rather park my truck, then to think, I was going to cut the rate and put another owner operator out of business. I just was not raised to hurt another, only to try and help. Why can't we try and work together. It benefits all. REPLY REPLY WITH QUOTE

Tom - I agree with what you have said, "there is no such thing as a back haul!" We allowed this to happen to ourselves. When unity does not exsist among us, then we open the door to those that will take advantage of us. Before i go any further and piss off a shipper, broker, or whom ever let me say this, This is America, Land of the free, and the greatest Nation in the world, period! I understand about deregulation, and being the Home of Free Enterprise. What's driving this country into the pits is all the "greed" that is taking place. When greed enters in to the equation then pride subsides! We should not be sought after because we will haul for a cheaper rate, but rather for the service that we provide. I equate that to merrit. This industry should look to those of us that are the best of the best, based on our abilities, ethics, moral fiber and such. These days ever thing in life is based on your "Credit Score or Credit Rating". Statistics show that if we are a lower scored number than we have a higher percentage of failure. This is wrong in so many ways that i will not even began to try and defend this way of thinking. It is designed to create failure, the survial of the fittness theory.I do agree that this way of thinking will weed out some of the bad thats in this industry, however it usually takes out more of the good simply because they could not survive due to the cut throating that goes on. If we all truly love the indistry that we choose to make our living in then we should all be willing to give back to it! I've not been a member on this sight all that long, but i have watched all the Forum Topics and for the most part there are only a few that are willing to do this, like the Booby West, Tammie Stifflemire, Mat Holton, Wendell Mohler to mention only a few, i am sure there are more i just dont know them. i've noticed that over 1300 hits to this one subject matter have happened, yet only three people have responsed to it! Run the numbers on that and see what kind of a precentage it come up to be, that sucks!
One final thought here, you said, "you were not raised to hurt another, only to help," not trying to turn this into a Bible lesson here, but Tom thats scriptural. i agree with you and would stand in the gap with you on this way of thinking! What Livestock Network has done here is provide us with a "Tool" that we should use constructively and wisely. It is a bridge that brings this market place together hopefully for the betterment of the industry as we all work together in helping it grow in fertile soil! For what it was worth!

Fuels gone down 20 cents and rates gone down 50 cents across this load board. Seems as tho the brokers and buyes have made a game of how far in the dirt they can push us before we fold. There is no loyalty anywhere in this business, its all about the money and every man for him self. Sad but true! REPLY REPLY WITH QUOTE
