If you quoted your customer a decent rate on this looks like you can pocket a hefty profit. Shame on any idiot for hauling so cheap, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BACK HAUL, a haul is a haul.

After calling about 15 trucking companies, which is what I always do b/c I don't trust the loadboards, and I quoted him $3200. That's when he told me these cattle trucks were hauling for those prices below. Some are doing it for $1800. Don't know how or why they're doing it but they are. Makes my life as a broker difficult and I'm sure it makes yours even more difficult as a truck driver. But it was a good thing though. I found this board in the process and learned alot more about the product he was trying to move. In the end, it's too cheap of a product to be moving that distance. At the prices it's trading for, it shouldn't move more than 300-400 miles.....................Needless to say I'm not moving those loads REPLY REPLY WITH QUOTE

Good job Sean. It sounds like your off to a good start, not giving in to cheap freight. We do the same thing out here. I have sat because I wouldn't haul cheap and it has always worked out.

One thing I'm learning about some of these guys is they let you quote just to see if you can quote even lower than the low prices they're already receiving. They already know what they have on the table but an even further bargain allows them to make more money on the tonnage. I have one guy I just did quotes for and I found a carrier that was willing to go for so low that it called them again after getting their email to confirm that it wasn't a typo. In any event, I presented the rates to the shipper and was informed that some carrier bid even lower. In addition, he'd spoken to some of his colleagues about other carriers willing to go even lower. Man, the freight's out there but all of this undercutting is going to kill the trucking industry. I mean, really look at it. You've got some shippers that go rail but in some areas, rail is not a viable option. These undercutters are undercutting for absolutely NO REASON. The shipper has to use a truck one way or another. There are regions I see drivers doing "backhauls" from where the shipper is given so much more negotiating power than they should have.

I'm in the process of sourcing my own products and I'm only shipping them within a certain radius. That way, I can pay my source more money, I can pay the truck more money, and I can charge my end customer less. It makes things stress free and works out for everyone. I don't need to be a millionaire. But I'll become one by taking care of ppl.
