I think the F.M.C.S.A. can go to hell and take their little black box with them. The government really needs to stop screwing the people that make this country what it is, and go tend to the people that want to destroy it! |

now that everyone has voiced thier concerns here. it is time to take the next step, contact your elected officals and tell them your concerns on the issue. the ooida has information on how to contact your states congressmen and other government offices. take your concerns to them. it may not do much but its the only way to try and change what is happening in the industry. | REPLY REPLY WITH QUOTE |

The sad truth to all of this is it's just like anything else that affects the trucking industry wrongly. We all bitch and moan and claim we should all shut down and when it comes time to do something.... we wither on the vine and lay down and take it! There are so many of us small companies that can ill afford to shut down for any length of time that we have absolutely no other recourse. The trucking industry is completely disorganized and fractured, therefore, all bark and no bite! We have absolutely no representation in Washington that is effective and what little that there is, is completely out of touch with reality and the problems that plague us! Till people actually start standing up and defending theirselves, I don't look for anything to change. We need to come up with a common goal and also a common sense plan get our voices heard and to attack the special interest groups and bureaucrats that get all of theses regulations and laws passed, I don't see alot of hope. To combat it and get our voices heard without killing ourseves, I wonder then, why we cannot just shut one state down at a time? Let everyone one work as they are, but we pick one state, and nothing is moved in or out. Let the local trucks keep working in state. My intentions are to make the industry heard with the least amount of impact on the small business owners Is this feasible? Will this make a big enough splash? What would be the reprecussions? Can we get enough companies on board to implement it? We need to be able to find a voice and then have some teeth to get their attention with. This is just one idea, if you have one I am all ears as I am sure everyone else is. What say you? Signed....Brian at Prime Time |

As I read through these post it looks to me like there are a lot of freighthaulers responding to this. OK with a EOBR, level the playing field...what the fish? We are talking about moving cattle 1200 miles overnight. How are you going to do that with a black box. Level the playing field...you would put 3/4 of the cow haulers out of business. Bull Haulers used to be cowboys and farmers that decided to haul stock. That mindset carried over to cowtruckin', getting the job done, riding for the brand,no matter what it took. Reading the responses I see sure doesnt match that! Just sayin! Brian, good thoughts but the nature of our business wont let it happen unfortunately. Dont know what the answers are but I know that a black box isnt it! | REPLY REPLY WITH QUOTE |

It's very simple, Money talks and bullshit walks!! The large companies pushing electronic recorders have formed an alliance(as per article in Tranport Topics). They have tried for years to "low rate" the owner operator/small fleets out of business and it has not worked. In recent years they have been contibuting large amounts of money to politicians and now are to the point that they want results. The are putting heavy pressure on the politicians to try and legislate us out of business. In my view they have a good chance of doing it. If you regularly read a variety of industry trade publications you will notice a steady increase in talk and support for electronic recorders. From what I have gathered it's not a question of "if" they will come but "when". Given that, our industry (livestock transportation) is in for a change larger than when trains and trucks started moving livestock instead of horses and dogs. Truckers will not only be effected, cow/calf farmers, stocker operations, buyers, cattle traders, feedyards, fat cattle owners and investors, people involved in commodities trading, packers, and food processors. I beleive it is our job as truckers to make sure everyone in the chain is aware of the situation at hand. It is crucial that this is done in a well informed manner WITHOUT sensationalism. There are people in the short abbreviated list I compiled that have a hell of alot more money and political power than the "big" trucking companies. If these changes move forward, it will get in EVERYONES pocket I mentioned in my list. I not sure how to organize something like this but we do have people/industries dependent on our job as livestock haulers that can help. Maybe the angle to push is for an "agricultural exemption" like for sales tax, overweight grain truckss during harvest etc. The agricultural lobbying power is one of the strongest in Washington. Farm Bureau, Dupont, ADM etc. |

There is a real logical solution to this whole senerio... Those in favor of these particular boxes should also have to adhere to this particular type of privacy infringement all day and oh yes, everyday !!! Lets go just one step further here shall we, the day each and every D.O.T Officer- Law Enforcement Officer-And Fire Fighter have one of these boxes installed in their vehicles, I probably will no longer feel near as threatened by this NEW BULL-S IT TYPE OF HARRASSEMENT ! But now lets not all hold our breaths... HA! HA! |

First & formost I do not agree with the DOT's push for the little black box. It's not the American way, meaning hard work and doing what ever it takes to get the job done, way! It's going to hurt the livestock hauling industry, and as a matter of fact it will hurt any transportation industry that serves the "AG Industry". I know alot of the problems in this buisness are hurting us and we as an industry have brought some of them on to our selves. But complaining and talking about a shut down is not going to solve them, because you know we have no voice when it comes to the Fed & State Gov. The past has provin that. Shutting down only pisses people off and it doesn't work because you will never unite all the truckers (too many factions, O/O , compnay drivers, private fleets, mega fleets, and manufacure owned fleets.)There are no teeth in that threat . So this is what I propose we ALL need to do, address the custumers and let them know what this is going to do to them! What this is going to COST THEM! When a truck & trailer costs 200,000+ and it is only running 1/2 the miles it normaly ran the past year, it will double the rates. When it comes havest time, roundup time, or any big push to move thier crop, stock or product and they can't get trucks, ask them "now what are you going to do". It's Trillions of dollars lost when thier loads are sitting on the docks rotting, standing in dried up grasslands starving or standing knee deep in mud at salebarns shrinking. Even if the Rail road would try to pick up the slack, it can't do the job as timely & efficiently as the trucker. They say we can just put more trucks on the road to get the job done (More trucks on the road, now thats really going to be safer, yah right) , and yes we could, BUT, the Ag industry is a seasonal buisness and we can't sustain the extra trucks all year long so that means rates again will have to be higher because there will be more of them sitting around doing nothing in the off seaon! They will say put 2 drivers in every truck, well you know as well as I do, that truck has a hard enough time feeding one family. so again rates will have to raise to support 2 familys. Everyone seams to forget we are a service industry and we have a job because a cusomer has a need for what you do best, get thier loads from point A to Point B in a timely manner. And if we can't get that job done because of the government regs, we need to really push the customers into seeing & speaking up to let the burocrats know how this decision can hurt this country and economy. Lets put the preasure on our customers, (Money talks & bull*hit walks) well they have the money and its going to hit their pocket books as well. And don't just say something about it to them, you need to have a real decusion and don't let up on them because some of my customers don't think this is going to happen so I'm trying to compile some info from the DOT to let them know this is REAL & COMING SOON! I think we can do this so lets not get lazy thinking the other guy will talk to the customers. This effects us ALL. Good Luck. Terry@Maverick Dispatch | REPLY REPLY WITH QUOTE |
